Meet the visionary team driving Illumio’s innovation, growth, and commitment to Zero Trust security.
As Founder, CEO, and Board Member of Illumio, Andrew is responsible for the overall strategy and vision of the company. With deep expertise in Zero Trust, segmentation, network security, and regulatory and compliance management, Andrew is the Executive Sponsor of many of Illumio’s largest customers worldwide, including Citi, HSBC, Salesforce, and Microsoft. Andrew frequently participates in panels, articles, and podcasts for leading industry events and publications. Andrew was named to Goldman Sachs’ "100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs" seven times as part of its Builders & Innovators program and received Ernst & Young’s Bay Area Entrepreneur of the Year 2024.
Andrew serves as a Board Member of Emigrant Bank, as well as an advisor to several cyber and technology start-ups, and is an active angel investor. Andrew graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BSBA in Finance, and he is both a guest lecturer on entrepreneurship and a National Council member of the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the university.
As Senior Vice President of Support and Services, Scott is responsible for leading Illumio’s customer experience and implementation engagements. Previously, Scott built the support organization at Riverbed, where he grew revenue from $10 million to more than $400 million, operating a 24/7, global, follow-the-sun environment that supported a range of products from consumer-level software downloads to software and hardware appliances for 90 percent of the global 100 enterprises.
Prior to Riverbed, Scott was with Intransa, where he served as Vice President of Client Advocacy, and Luminous Networks, where he was Vice President of Customer Service. Scott graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
As Chief Product Officer (CPO), Mario Espinoza is responsible for leading Illumio’s product strategy and execution. Mario has a proven track record of creating and growing market leading products. Most recently, Mario was Vice President of SaaS Security and Data Protection at Palo Alto Networks, where he led product management and engineering for the CASB and Data Protection teams.
Prior to Palo Alto Networks, Mario was Vice President of Product Management for Information Protection at Symantec, where he was responsible for Data Loss Prevention, Encryption, Data Classification and UEBA. Before that, Mario held various positions in the Symantec Enterprise Security product management organization. Previously, Mario worked at SAP emerging solutions, co-founded two startups, and worked in Venture Capital. Mario holds an MBA degree from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and MSc and Engineering degrees from the University of Chile.
As Chief People Officer, Kingsley is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Illumio’s human resources, including global strategy, learning and development, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, team engagement, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. He brings over 20 years of experience building motivated, highly engaged teams and helping companies develop and refine value-driven programs.
Prior to Illumio, Kingsley served as Chief People Officer at Intercom, Alteryx (NYSE: AYX), and Vlocity, where he helped to scale the company through its acquisition by Salesforce. Previously, he served in leadership roles at MuleSoft, Salesforce, Accenture, and Booz Allen. He also serves on the board of directors at Nivati.
David holds an M.A. in Organizational Sciences from George Washington University, and a B.A. in International Relations from Catholic University. He is a retired Lieutenant from the U.S. Navy Reserve.
As Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), John Lens is responsible for leading the company’s global revenue operations.
Prior to Illumio, John served as the Senior Vice President of the Americas sales organization at Alteryx, where he was responsible for leading the company for growth at scale. Before that, John held several senior executive sales leadership positions at VMware, including Vice President of the America’s Software Define Datacenter Strategy (SDDC) for the Virtual Cloud Networking, Security, Hyper-Converged & Cloud Management Business Unit. While leading SDDC, he was responsible for more than 67 percent of VMware’s SDDC yearly revenue growth or $3+ billion in bookings.
John received a business degree from Fitchburg State University and attended the Northwestern Kellogg School Executive Program. He serves as a board member for the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, a non-profit organization promoting and funding research to enhance the quality of life for those affected by the constant urge for hunger.
As Senior Vice President of Global Partner Sales and Alliances, Todd is responsible for overseeing the channel strategy and expansive partner ecosystem at Illumio. A highly-effective sales leader with a consistent track record of building successful sales strategies and high-performing teams, Todd has held channel leadership roles for over 20 years, including at market-leading companies Palo Alto Networks, NetApp, and Cohesity.
Prior to Illumio, Todd led the Global Partner Sales practice at Tanium, a leading cybersecurity provider in converged endpoint management (XEM). There, he was responsible for overseeing the strategies, teams, and programs that drove Tanium solutions to all customer segments and consumption models across geographies. Todd has been recognized by CRN as a channel leader for four consecutive years. He is also a proud graduate of the University of Arizona and is based in Orange County, California.
As Chief Financial Officer at Illumio, Anup is responsible for Illumio’s financial, legal, IT, and business strategies. He brings over 25 years of experience leading global growth and financial operations in the technology industry.
Prior to Illumio, Anup was EVP and CFO of Anaplan, an enterprise cloud planning software company. Previously, Anup was CFO of Nimble Storage, where he led the company through a successful IPO in 2013 and acquisition by HPE. Before Nimble, Anup served as CFO at Clearwell Systems (acquired by Symantec) and CFO at Warranty Corporation of America (an Asurion company).
Anup has been recognized as CFO of the Year by both Financial Executives International (FEI) and FEI Silicon Valley in 2017-18 and Finalist for the Bay Area CFO of the Year in 2014. He holds BA and MA Honors degrees in Economics and Management Science from Cambridge University, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
Karl Van den Bergh is responsible for driving Illumio’s global marketing strategy, including brand positioning, demand generation, and go-to-market execution. With over 25 years of leadership experience spanning startups and large enterprises, Karl has a proven track record of building high-performing teams and accelerating growth. Before joining Illumio, he served as CMO at Gigamon, where he led a marketing transformation that elevated the company’s leadership in the deep observability market. Karl has also held leadership roles at DataStax, TIBCO, and Jaspersoft. He holds a Master’s in Computer Science from Imperial College London and was named Cybersecurity Marketer of the Year in 2024.

Board of directors
As a Partner at Juxtapose, Steve is helping to lead the creation of new software and enterprise-centric businesses. Before Juxtapose, Steve was Managing Director at General Catalyst Partners for nine years. Until 2013, Steve was Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of research and development at VMware. During his tenure, Steve helped build a world-class 3,000-person engineering organization that delivered numerous industry-changing products; he was also named InfoWorld’s CTO of the Year in 2009.
Prior to VMware, Steve co-led the development of a virtual CPU with “code morphing” technology at Transmeta Corporation, and held roles at SGI and MIPS Technologies. Outside of work, Steve focuses on the advancement of children’s education, particularly around STEM. Steve holds a PhD and a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University, and a BA with distinction in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin. Steve currently serves on the compensation committee at Illumio.
John Hinshaw has extensive experience leading and transforming organizations in a wide range of industries including Financial Services, Aerospace, Technology, Telecom, and Food & Beverages. He currently serves on the Board of Sysco Foods and chairs their Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. He also serves on the Board of Illumio, a cyber security company, where he chairs their Compensation Committee.
Most recently, John joined HSBC in London in December 2019, serving as Group Chief Operating Officer until September 2024. While at HSBC, John was responsible for running and transforming the bank’s global operations, including managing it through COVID. His team was 130,000 strong with an $11B budget and oversight of procuring over $15B. He was a member of the Group Executive Committee, chaired the HSBC Services Company and served on the board of HSBC’s Innovation Bank.
Prior to HSBC, John held senior executive roles including EVP Technology and Operations at Hewlett Packard, Global CIO of Boeing, and CIO of Verizon Wireless. He also served on the Boards of Bank of New York Mellon, DocuSign and the Technology Advisory Board of Bridgewater.
He is a Limited Partner in Semper Virens VC Fund. He and his wife Julia are the majority owners of Blackbird Vineyards in Napa Valley, California. They have also established acharitable foundation with a focus on innovation in education, healthcare, and shelter. John holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in computer information systems from James MadisonUniversity and is a graduate of the G100 next generation leadership program.
John M. Jack (JJ) has worked in the software industry since 1980 in sales, marketing, and executive management. Highlights include: CEO at Fortify Software (sold to Hewlett Packard) and CEO at Covalent (sold to VMware). COO at The Vantive Corporation (public, sold to PeopleSoft), and executive positions at Sybase, Inc. Since leaving Hewlett Packard in January of 2012, he has served as a consultant to startup companies and their CEOs. JJ currently serves on a number of venture-backed company boards in the cybersecurity and other segments. He is also a board partner at the VC firm Andreessen Horowitz. JJ serves on the audit committee at Illumio.
Mike Kourey has more than 25 years of financial and strategic leadership experience. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Dialpad, an AI-powered communications and collaboration technology company. Previously, Kourey served as the CFO of Okta after five years as board member and audit committee chair. He also served as CFO of both Vlocity and Medallia. Previously, Kourey was a partner at Khosla Ventures and also served as a member of the board and the audit commitees of Aruba Networks, RingCentral, and Riverbed. In addition to leading the significant revenue growth and scale of public and private companies, Kourey has been deeply involved in five successful IPOs as CFO, venture partner, or audit chair. Kourey currently serves as chair of the audit committee at Illumio.
